Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead

1990

Gary Oldman, Tim Roth, Richard Dreyfuss

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead is the hilarious screen adaptation of the Tom Stoppard play about  the most under developed characters in Hamlet. They know one of them is Rosencrantz and one is Guildenstern but can't quite figure out who is who. They know they were woken by a messenger in the morning and were sent for by the King of Denmark because Hamlet is going a bit crazy but that is about it........

as they go, somewhat unintentionally, through the story of Hamlet, Rosencrantz (or is it Guildenstern) learns a bit about how the world works but never quite manages to do the right thing at the right time....Guildenstern (or is it Rosencrantz) gets frustrated with his friends lack of ability to do or say anything original and there is a weird bunch of travelling actors who never quite let on the extent of what they know.

It is witty...it is comical and Oldman and Roth are a fantastic pair....

Plus...it has a very interesting scene in a bath :P

Immortal Beloved

1994

Gary Oldman, Jeroen Krabbe, Isabella Rossellini, Johanna ter Steege, Valeria Golino

What a beautiful film!

Immortal Beloved tells the story of the magnificant composer Ludwig van Beethoven (Oldman). He has just passed away and a mysterious letter has been found that leaves his entire wealth and estate to his "immortal beloved". His friend and secretary, Schindler (Krabbe) decides that he must find this mystery woman and sets out on a journey to find her....it is not easy. Beethoven was a womaniser. He also did not have many friends as he was almost completely deaf and this caused him to appear rude and aloof.

I can't say anything else about the plot as it will give it away.

The acting is superb and i know i know i keep saying it but i absolutly LOVE Gary Oldman's eyes . So full of emotion. He portrayed Beethoven perfectly even down to the smallest mannerisms....I really did feel sorry for him over the being deaf issue. People were not as accomodating back then.

The woman were all beautiful  and the scenery and costumes were breathtaking and i really don't need to say how beautiful the music is.

Absolutly lovely film and i recommend it to everyone. I was in tears by the end, and i am not one who cries very easily. The ending was heartbreaking.

Romeo Is Bleeding

1993

Gary Oldman, Lena Olin, Roy Schieder, Juliette Lewis, Annabella Sciorra

Well, im not quite sure about this one......

Romeo is Bleeding tells the story of a corrupt police sergeant, Jack Grimaldi (Oldman)  who thinks he has it all but foolishly wants more. He likes sex and money and is willing to flout his authority to get it.He has a loving wife, Natalie (Sciorra) and an equally beautiful mistress, Sheri (Lewis).....and he feeds his hole in the back garden, like a father would feed a child, with the dirty money he gains from his dealings with the mafia.
Mob leader, Schieder, wants Mona Demarkov dead and Grimaldi is the man for the job......however, Demarkov is dangerous, beautiful and seductive and Jack is weak......Promising him much more money than the mob to fake her death, Demarkov leads Jack into a downward spiral of cat and mouse which is going to lead to one of them dead....

Sounds good doesn't it........it is just such a shame the the idea does not translate as well to film.

For me it seemed disjointed and quite alot of it made no sense.....There is virtually no character development apart from Grimaldi and I wondered why characters like Natalie were even there in the first place....

I actually saw then ending a few months before watching the film and I thought that was really good.  However, through very bad editing we see Demarkov and Grimaldi having their last sexual encounter before the cops bursting in and suddenly the ending is thrust upon you......nothing is explained......you are left to fend for yourself.

The good points about the film are the noir aspects...the voice overs from Grimaldi are integral when the story is not being explained well on the screen. Oldman is fantastic as Grimaldi and although the ending is hearthbreaking im inclined to  say, well it serves you right. His expressions are exceptional and like I have said before, you only need to look into his eyes to know what he is thinking.

Olin is just evil......she will stop at nothing to get what she wants......she should probably have got an oscar nod for this role.

The relationship between Oldman and Olin is just electric and you can tell why Grimaldi fell for her. She only has to look at him and he is like a doe eyed child.

Schieder and Sciorra are stupidly underused but what is there is believable...Grimaldi is the charm offensive and Natalie just can't resist him. Schieder, although almost a caricature, is ruthless and i wouldn't cross him....would love to know how Mona got him into the back of her car so easily though...again, that is never explained.

Juliette Lewis is very cute as the cocktail waitress, Sheri........I truely believed she had fallen head over heels for Jack and her death was quite shocking.....

Romeo is Bleeding...........a film noir which promises so so much, but leaves the audience wondering how it all happened. Saved by superb performances.

Remember.....JUST SAY NO!!!...Jack learned the hard way

The Pianist

2002- Roman Polanski

Thomas Kretschmann, Adrien Brody, Emelia Fox, Ed Stoppard
The Pianist tells the haunting and tragic true story of the wonderful Jewish pianist, Wladyslaw Szpilman (Adrien Brody). He is loved by many and loves nothing more than to play the piano on Polish radio. Warsaw is changing. Jews are no longer allowed the privaledges of others. A stroll around the park is forbidden. We see Wladyslaw and his family struggling to survive against the sheer brutality of the German forces. After witnessing his whole family being carted of in a train bound for a concentration camp, Wladyslaw is on the run and must trust in a few good people to ensure his survival.

The film is gritty and raw..and the stone cold fact that it actually happened never strays far from your mind.
The cinematography is beautiful and the image of a war torn, burning Warsaw will always stay with me.

Adrien Brody is spellbounding as Szpielman and the scene where he is playing the piano for the German officer Hosenfeld...well there really are no words. You have to see and hear it for yourself.

Thomas Kretschmann is fantastic as the one good nazi among a whole bunch of bad ones. Is it bad that he plays a German officer so well? (Think of Der Untergang/Downfall)

(It does contain some very harrowing scenes however, just be prepared)

Road To Perdition

2002
Tom Hanks, Daniel Craig, Paul Newman, Tyler Hoechlin, Stanley Tucci

Quite possibly one of the most beautiful films i have seen. In fact, this film has my favourite scene out of any film in it. It is both visually and musically stunning.

It tells the tale of the Sullivan family who live under the care of elderly mafia boss, John Rooney (the excellent Paul Newman). The father, Mike (Tom Hanks) has managed to keep the fact he is a mafia hitman hidden from his two young sons. Rooney took him in as a son when he was a young boy and has given his family a home in return for Mike's service to the mafia.  However, Michael Junior decides he wants to find out what his dad does for a living and follows him on a hit one night. Michael witnesses a brutal murder at the hands of Rooney's corrupt son Connor (Daniel Craig) but under the protection of his father, promises not to say anything. Connor thinks the child will talk and in a horrific scene, shoots Michael's mother and his little brother, Peter, dead. Thinking it was Michael he has killed, Connor is beaten by his father, but John can't bring himself to allow his own son to be killed so places him in hiding and under his protection. Mike returns home to find his wife and child dead and to save his remaining son, they go on the run. The intention is to go to an aunt's house in Perdition but following them is the sadistic and twisted photographer/assasin, Harlen Maguire. (Jude Law)

I won't say anymore but even if you don't like the storyline, then please, watch this film for the cinematography. It is just beautiful, and there is a scene in the rain, with Paul Newman (the favourite scene I was talking about) that is breathtaking and never fails to make me emotional.

The performances are amazing and while usually i am not THE biggest fan of Tom Hanks, he is perfect for this role. Paul Newman is utterly fantastic as the father caught in the middle, where does his loyalty lie? This was Newman's last film where he was on screen before he died and that always remains poignant throughout. Like Gary Oldman, Paul Newman does not have to say anything but you know exactly what he is thinking, by his eyes.  Daniel Craig in what I believe to be his best role. He plays the jealous spoiled brat perfectly but always remains sinister......Jude Law in what i believe to be one of his best roles. He has very sinister eyes and when used in this film, he becomes so creepy it makes your skin crawl.

10/10 It is a must see and Thomas Newman is a musical genius.

The Fifth Element - Luc Besson

Bruce Willis, Gary Oldman, Milla Jovovich, Ian Holm, Chris Tucker (1997)

Ahh. The Fifth Element. The film I have always meant to get on dvd but never quite got round to it for some reason or another. Had a lovely time sitting watching my VHS copy today (still got a good picture for being 13 years old). The premise of the story is that a big ball of evil is floating about in the sky, doing, well im not quite sure what a big ball of evil would do floating in space..it must be quite lonely up there. It's way way in the future (flying cars and everything) and this big ball of evil wants to obliterate the earth. To save the earth an oddly cute race of metalic aliens, Monascheiwans, have, in their possesion the ultimate weapon to destroy the evil. It consists of 4 stones representing the 4 elements, fire, wind, water and earth. The fifth element is a supreme being who is the missing link - whom everyone seems to think would be a male....she fortunatly is not, as every male on this film seems to lead to some sort of disaster and the world would be gone in an instant. On their way to earth, the Monascheiwans are unfortunatly killed (i don't like that bit) by some butt ugly aliens called Mangalores. All seems lost. The big ball of evil has recruted the expertise (and i use the term lightly) of a certain Jean - Baptiste Emanuel  Zorg - Zorg for short. He is corrupt and has not yet seemed to realise that if he does help Mr Shadow (oh yes i meant to say the big ball of evil even has a name)  he will die along with everyone else on earth, but we forgive cause he is so darn cute. So with Zorg, Mr Shadow and the Mangalores all in cahoots, who could possibly come to save the day............BRUCE WILLIS - of course. He plays the depressed and downtrodden Korben Dallas. Lee Loo (the fifth element) and Korben meet and he is immediatly drawn into the war....along with a priest, Vito Cornelious (who, through the generations has been passed down the secret of the fifth element) . Who else could possibly be needed on this journey, well i will tell you. In some hilarious mishaps (zero stones, zero crates) Zorg and The Mangalores never seem to get their hands on the stones. Lee Loo, Korben and Vito head to a big floating hotel (you keeping up) to meet a big blue diva alien who has them. There we meet Chris Tucker in his most annoying, yet best role yet as the camp but very straight radio host Ruby Rod...he doesn't actually do much apart from scream and makes matters worse but he is still very funny. So, with Zorg and Korben still having never met, Korben gets the stones from the alien and Zorg (in all his infinate wisdom)has been given a box which he thinks contains the stones and decides blowing up the hotel would be a good thing, so plants a bomb(most people would check the box before they leave Zorg- men, sigh) So with a huge explosion and death very close, Korben, Lee Loo, Ruby and Vito all escape on Zorg's ship that he has just got off to go stop the bomb and find the stones (oh Zorg, you aint to bright really are you), Zorg finds and stops his bomb only to be blown up 5 seconds later by an even bigger bomb set off by a prick of a Mangalore, Zorg it seems, did not choose his friends wisely. So, with the best supporting actor floating about in little pieces up in space now, we go back to the main story. Everyone is celebrating, but it is all to soon, the big ball of evil is now on a very fast collision course with earth. OH NO! Our heroes make it back just in time to get the stones in place and Lee Loo in the centre as she should be.....but wait...to open the stones they must use earth, wind, water and fire (it's quite genius really) and Korben has only one match left so everyone holds their breath. (i wonder how many takes that took) Lee Loo tells Korben she has no purpose if she cannot find love. He of course tells her he loves her and the weapon against evil does its work. The film ends with the wuss of a president being given a stern talking to by Korben's deranged mother in a phone call and of course Lee Loo and Korben get it oooon!

The performances are fantastic, most notebly Gary Oldman of course, as the misguided fool Zorg. You can't help but love him.

The sets and colours are fantastic and i would have loved to have seen them on the big screen.

and the costumes were made by Jean Paul Gaultier....need i say more.

Pirates of The Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

(2003)
Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley, Geoffrey Rush, Jack Davenport, Jonathan Price

I havn't watched this film in years, so upon returning back to the bonny Kingdom of Fife for Christmas, I took up the chance while at a friends house last night. Not the easiest thing to do with two young children in tow (not mine i might add) but never the less I persevered. Johnny Depp is just wonderful as Jack Sparrow and i truely do believe this role was completely written for him and could not be played by anyone else. (he does bear a very striking resemblance to Drexel Spivey in True Romance, though admittedly does not have a screwed up eye and likes to take advantage of women.....oh wait ). The storyline, while not complex, is quite in depth and I guess is trying to teach children not to steal other peoples belongings or you will turn into a skeleton in the moonlight.............actually, that would be pretty cool. The mutinous crew of The Black Pearl, led by the fearsome, but strangely human, Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) are searching the high seas for the last piece of the treasure of Cortez which they foolishly stole, even though a terrible curse would be bestowed upon them. Sparrow, we learn, used to be the Black Pearl's captain, until Barbossa led a mutiny and left him to die on an island filled with rum and a single shot pistol. He is now on a mission to get his ship back...unfortunatly now i have to bring in the worst thing about this film.......the love story.  I might just rush this bit......Elizabeth Swan (Keira Knightley) is the irksome daughter of a governer who has a bit of a thing for pirates and when she comes across a young pirate boy named Will Turner as a young girl, steals his pirate medallion for her own. Will Turner is the son of Bootstrap Bill Turner (a former crew member who now resides with Davy Jones) who the crew of the Black Pearl need the blood of to help lift their curse. After a case of mistaken identity, Elizabeth gets kidnapped and Will and Sparrow must rescue her....Norrington also comes along for the ride(he is an officer in the governers army and has proposed to Elizabeth) but since he has proposed to a young woman he has known since she was a little girl, he is a little bit pervy really. Battles ensue and I think the good guys win ( hmm  maybe this is complex) and Will gets his girl.......however, im more interested in what happens to Jack Sparrow, who, after escaping a hanging, gets rescued by the  Black Pearl............BRING ME THAT HORIZON!!!!!!!

7/10 (only because Keira Knightly grates on me all the way through - if i was Sparrow, i would have shot her on that island. I mean she burnt all the food, the shade and the rum......"why is the rum gone
