When a goverment Mi5 agent is brutally murdered in a mission gone wrong in Istanbul, George Smiley (Oldman) is brought out of retirement to help Control (Hurt) put the pieces together.......however, the deeper Smiley gets to the truth, the more he realises it is right in front of his nose.
Now, i have never seen the original series so i am purely going by the performances in this film. I thought it was bloody brilliant, and a pure credit to British acting and filmaking......why they don't make more like this i will never know. Oldman truely deserves his Oscar and Bafta nominations.....and i hope he wins, i really do! Understated cinema perfected!
